This project, Carrés magiques or Magical Squares , is a collaboration between French photographer and writer Suzanne Doppelt and English-language writer Cole Swensen (who also happens to take a lot of photographs). It is the result of a Villa Le Nôtre residency grant that they were awarded for the spring of 2019. The Potager du Roi (the King's Kitchen Garden at Versailles), which sponsors the grant, is  today run as an ongoing experiment in sustainable gardening/sustainable agriculture. The fifteen planches or plates created by Doppelt and Swensen, accessible through the links below, address aspects of gardens ranging from the usual--vegetables, flowers, gardeners--to the less-frequently encountered, such as ghosts, poisonous plants, and nocturnal  life.
